Mireya Pérez began her interpreting career as a certified medical interpreter. She worked in a general and children’s hospital and spent almost 10 years as a staffed interpreter in a K-12 public education school district, where she championed the vital role of trained interpreters in education. With a Master’s in Communications, Mireya is committed to advocating for trained interpreters and continuing to elevate the voices and stories of language professionals worldwide. Pérez also hosts a podcast titled ‘Brand the Interpreter’ where she interviews interpreters and discusses roadblocks they may have encountered while in this profession.

Sameh Abdelkader

Sameh Abdelkader is the Director of our Education Department and is the lead instructor for two medical interpreter training courses: the nationally recognized 40-hour Bridging the Gap (BTG) course and the 48-hour The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition course. In 2012, Sameh delivered the BTG course to over 120 students.

Mr. Abdelkader has over 22 years of experience in education and has brought his skills in management, teaching, training, recruitment, and cultural competency to Liberty Language Services.

Mr. Abdelkader holds a B.A. in English from Zagzig University in Sharkya, Egypt. In addition to being a licensed trainer for BTG and The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition, he is also a licensed trainer for the legal interpreter training course, The Language of Justice. As an educator and member of the IMIA, he adheres to the IMIA Educators Code of Ethics.

Maria Teresa is a licensed instructor for Bridging the Gap and instructor for the training course Behavioral Health Interpreting developed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. She is an experienced video remote interpreter and, since 2020, has trained over 250 interpreters for remote video interpreting and telemedicine interpreting assignments.

Additionally, she developed new and updated language proficiency tests, including specialized tests for public schools, behavioral health, and medical settings. Maria Teresa has a degree in microbiology from Universidad de Los Andes Bogotá, Colombia. In April 2021, she was a presenter at the annual Virginia Language Access Conference.

PROFESSIONAL LEVEL TRAINING: QUALIFIED MEDICAL INTERPRETER

This course is a nationally recognized medical interpreter training developed by the Cross Cultural Healthcare Program over 25 years ago. Liberty Language Services is a licensed trainer for the Washington, DC Metro area.

FOR TRAINED AND EXPERIENCED INTERPRETERS

In this course, you’ll get an in-depth look into one of the most in-demand fields of interpreting today. After taking the course, you’ll be able to work as a non-court Professional Legal Interpreter for law firms, government agencies, law enforcement, and other clients within the legal field.

Engage with a live, experienced instructor. This classroom-based learning experience is taught by a dedicated, live instructor who has experience in legal and court interpretation. This course takes place in a virtual classroom setting conducted over Zoom.

In 2007, a coalition of nonprofit legal and community services based in Washington, D.C. set up a legal interpreter bank project. They needed a curriculum to train community and court interpreters in how to interpret for legal services in community settings. The particular focus of this course is a program to guide legal interpreters and prepare them for attorney-client interviews in nonprofit legal services.

There are 3 core components that the course will cover:

1. Procedures and Ethics – Understand relevant codes of ethics, and apply a code of ethics and standards of practice to ethical dilemmas and simulated encounters.

2. Linguistic Mediation –  Learn when and how to provide linguistic mediation, model steps for linguistic mediation, and develop linguistic mediation techniques and strategies.

3. Interpreting for Legal Services – Learn the U.S. Legal System, how to handle requests from clients and attorneys, and the terminology required for non-courtroom legal interpreting.

This course is three days of instruction (a total of 24 hours).

THE NEED
If interpreters perform legal interpretation incorrectly, many dangerous consequences could take place with devastating outcomes. For example, the client could:

  • Be deported.
  • Lose urgently needed benefits for which the client is eligible; food stamps, SSI, TANF or Medical Assistance.
  • Go to prison.
  • Be suspended from school.
  • Lose child support, driver’s license/state identification card, or a job.
  • Go back to a situation of domestic abuse.
LEGAL INTERPRETING
Both community and court interpreters need guidance on how to perform effective legal interpreting in community settings. Unlike the courtroom, most legal interpreting in the community is collaborative, not adversarial. Examples may include interpreting for:

  • An attorney at a domestic violence center.
  • A medical exam requested by an insurance company following a car accident.
  • Immigration services provided by a lawyer or paralegal.
  • A child abuse or neglect investigation by Child Protective Services.
  • Special Education meetings in school settings.
TERMS OF ENROLLMENT
Suspension and Removal of Students

​Liberty Language Services and its instructors reserve the right to remove any student from a course or class if the student causes disruption and interferes in any way with learning and instruction. No refund will be provided to a student that is suspended or removed from a course for the above-mentioned reasons.

Withdrawal from the Course

A student must provide written notification that she or he is withdrawing from the course. No refund will be provided if the course has already started. In the case of an emergency, we can arrange to have you attend a different class.  The written request must be submitted by clicking this link.

Refunds

A minimum of 50% of your total tuition must be paid before the first day of class. Refunds will be processed as follows:  Written notification via email to support@libertylanguageservices.com before the first class starts: 75% of payments made will be refunded. After the course has started, no refund can be made. In the case of an emergency, we can arrange to have you attend a different class.

Liberty Language Services will maintain all confidential student information, including application information, while in the classroom and in regard to their attendance and participation in the LOJ course unless otherwise authorized. Student information will only be used by Liberty staff in processing students and with the Cross-Cultural Health Program in processing student test scores and certificates.

WHAT ARE THE SETTINGS FOR NON-COURTROOM LEGAL INTERPRETING?

Legal interpreting outside the courtroom can occur in many settings. Most are less formal than a courtroom, and distinct in other ways. Such settings may include law enforcement, nonprofit community services, government agencies, schools and health care. For example:

  • Attorney-client meetings
  • Immigration services
  • Interrogations by police officers
  • Mediation and arbitration
  • School board hearings and some special education services or meetings
  • Office of Human Rights investigations

Sameh Abdelkader

Sameh Abdelkader is the Director of our Education Department and is the lead instructor for two medical interpreter training courses: the nationally recognized 40-hour Bridging the Gap (BTG) course and the 48-hour The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition course. In 2012, Sameh delivered the BTG course to over 120 students.

Mr. Abdelkader has over 22 years of experience in education and has brought his skills in management, teaching, training, recruitment, and cultural competency to Liberty Language Services.

Mr. Abdelkader holds a B.A. in English from Zagzig University in Sharkya, Egypt. In addition to being a licensed trainer for BTG and The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition, he is also a licensed trainer for the legal interpreter training course, The Language of Justice. As an educator and member of the IMIA, he adheres to the IMIA Educators Code of Ethics.

Maria Teresa Buendia

Ms. Buendia is the Assistant Director of our Education Department and is an interpreter trainer and certified healthcare interpreter (CHI) for Spanish/English and has held CHI Spanish certification since 2013. Maria Teresa is a licensed instructor for Bridging the Gap and instructor for the training course Behavioral Health Interpreting developed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. She is an experienced video remote interpreter and, since 2020, has trained over 250 interpreters for remote video interpreting and telemedicine interpreting assignments.

Additionally, she developed new and updated language proficiency tests, including specialized tests for public schools, behavioral health, and medical settings. Maria Teresa has a degree in microbiology from Universidad de Los Andes Bogotá, Colombia. In April 2021, she was a presenter at the annual Virginia Language Access Conference.

Course Information
  • This self-paced online course is for aspiring medical interpreters who are looking for a comprehensive training program that will prepare them to work as professional interpreters in medical and healthcare settings. In this course, students will learn the standards of practice and code of ethics from both the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).
Qualification Goals
Be qualified to work as a freelance medical interpreter (independent contractor) for language service providers* across the US.

Be qualified to apply for staff interpreter positions at hospitals and medical facilities. (Note: Some states may require that medical interpreters earn their accreditation as a CMI or CHI before working professionally.)

Fulfill the 40-hour medical interpreter training pre-requisite to apply for the national medical interpreter exam with either NBCMI or CCHI.

*Students who complete this course will meet the training requirements to work for Liberty Language Services as a freelance medical interpreter.

Additional Requirements
  1. Students must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. A 4-year or bachelor’s degree is recommended. (Liberty DOES NOT require students to submit a copy of their diploma/degree before enrolling.)
  2. Students must make full payment or an initial installment before gaining access to the course.
  3. Students must have a computer and microphone to be able to complete the oral language proficiency tests. The proficiency tests are included in the price of tuition.
Acceptable Proficiency Exam Results

Below is a list of third-party language proficiency exam results that we will accept if you do not plan to take Liberty’s proficiency tests OR if we do not offer testing for your language.

  • ACTFL Oral Exams (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages): 3.5+ or at least Advanced Mid lvl.

  • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English, Level 4): B

  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English, Level 5): B

  • ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English): PASS

  • ELPT (English Language Proficiency Test): 950+

  • FCE (First Certificate in English, Level 3): A

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 7.0+

  • ILR 2 correlates with 3.5 Advanced Mid ACTFL (Being reviewed for equivalence)

Can I start the Professional Medical Interpreter course before completing my language proficiency test?

In order to start the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) course, you must complete your Language Proficiency Test (LPT) course.

How can I see my progress?

When accessing The Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) course, you can see your progress on the left-hand side of the course.

How many attempts do we get for the Professional Medical Interpreter test?

For the Language Proficiency Test (LPT) you have one attempt. If you need one more attempt, one is given free of charge. For the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) test, you get two attempts.

How much time do you have to the course?

To complete the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI), you have access for 60 days. To complete the Language Proficiency Test (LPT) course, you have access for 30 days.

How much is a language proficiency test?

This course comes with access to our Medical Language Proficiency Test (MLPT). This includes an English test and a test in your other spoken language. For additional languages, it costs $50 per test. We also offer a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) which is $100. It includes an English test and a test in your other spoken language. It costs an extra $50 per language to test more.

Do you allow extensions?

Yes, it costs $25 for your first extension. Requests for additional extensions will be judged on a case-by-case basis and payment of a minimum of $50 will be required.

What is the minimum passing score for the Professional Medical Interpreter?

You need to pass with a minimum score of 80% on both the Medical Terminology section and the Interpreter Skills section.
