About the Course

Multilinguals will learn the specialized skills they need to meet the demands of professional interpreting in today’s world. After taking the Professional Medical Interpreter course, you’ll be able to work as a Qualified Medical Interpreter (QMI).

This self-paced online course is for aspiring medical interpreters who are looking for a comprehensive training program that will prepare them to work as professional interpreters in medical and healthcare settings.

In this course, students will learn the standards of practice and code of ethics from both the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).

  • This self-paced online course is for aspiring medical interpreters who are looking for a comprehensive training program that will prepare them to work as professional interpreters in medical and healthcare settings.In this course, students will learn the standards of practice and code of ethics from both the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC).
QUALIFICATION GOALS

Be qualified to work as a freelance medical interpreter (independent contractor) for language service providers* across the US.

Be qualified to apply for staff interpreter positions at hospitals and medical facilities. (Note: Some states may require that medical interpreters earn their accreditation as a CMI or CHI before working professionally.)

Fulfill the 40-hour medical interpreter training pre-requisite to apply for the national medical interpreter exam with either NBCMI or CCHI.

*Students who complete this course will meet the training requirements to work for Liberty Language Services as a freelance medical interpreter.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Students must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. A 4-year or bachelor’s degree is recommended. (Liberty DOES NOT require students to submit a copy of their diploma/degree before enrolling.)
  2. Students must make full payment or an initial installment before gaining access to the course.
  3. Students must have a computer and microphone to be able to complete the oral language proficiency tests. The proficiency tests are included in the price of tuition.
ACCEPTABLE PROFICIENCY EXAM RESULTS

Below is a list of third-party language proficiency exam results that we will accept if you do not plan to take Liberty’s proficiency tests OR if we do not offer testing for your language.

  • ACTFL Oral Exams (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages): 3.5+ or at least Advanced Mid lvl.

  • CAE (Certificate in Advanced English, Level 4): B

  • CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English, Level 5): B

  • ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English): PASS

  • ELPT (English Language Proficiency Test): 950+

  • FCE (First Certificate in English, Level 3): A

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) 7.0+

  • ILR 2 correlates with 3.5 Advanced Mid ACTFL (Being reviewed for equivalence)

  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) 80+

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 570+ on paper; 230+ computer version; 90+ on iBT.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Sameh Abdelkader

Mr. Abdelkader is the Director of our Education Department and is the lead instructor for two medical interpreter training courses: the nationally recognized 40-hour Bridging the Gap (BTG) course and the 48-hour The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition course. In 2012, Sameh delivered the BTG course to over 120 students.

Mr. Abdelkader has over 22 years of experience in education and has brought his skills in management, teaching, training, recruitment, and cultural competency to Liberty Language Services.

Mr. Abdelkader holds a B.A. in English from Zagzig University in Sharkya, Egypt. In addition to being a licensed trainer for BTG and The Community Interpreter: Medical Edition, he is also a licensed trainer for the legal interpreter training course, The Language of Justice. As an educator and member of the IMIA, he adheres to the IMIA Educators Code of Ethics.

In order to start the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) course, you must complete your Language Proficiency Test (LPT) course.

How can I see my progress?

When accessing The Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) course, you can see your progress on the left-hand side of the course.

How many attempts do we get for the Professional Medical Interpreter test?

For the Language Proficiency Test (LPT) you have one attempt. If you need one more attempt, one is given free of charge. For the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI) test, you get two attempts.

How much time do you have to the course?

To complete the Professional Medical Interpreter (PMI), you have access for 60 days. To complete the Language Proficiency Test (LPT) course, you have access for 30 days.

How much is a language proficiency test?

This course comes with access to our Medical Language Proficiency Test (MLPT). This includes an English test and a test in your other spoken language. For additional languages, it costs $50 per test. We also offer a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) which is $100. It includes an English test and a test in your other spoken language. It costs an extra $50 per language to test more.

Do you allow extensions?

Yes, it costs $25 for your first extension. Requests for additional extensions will be judged on a case-by-case basis and payment of a minimum of $50 will be required.

What is the minimum passing score for the Professional Medical Interpreter?

You need to pass with a minimum score of 80% on both the Medical Terminology section and the Interpreter Skills section.
